PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a family of thousands of synthetic "forever chemicals" used in nonstick cookware, firefighting foam, food packaging and stain repellents. They earn the nickname because they essentially don't break down in the environment or the human body.
Are PFAS in Northern Virginia water?
Yes. Regional testing, including EWG's Northern Virginia sampling, has detected PFAS across the DC metro's water systems. In 2024 the EPA finalized the first-ever national drinking water limits for six PFAS compounds, including just 4 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS, a sign of how seriously regulators now treat even tiny concentrations.
Why PFAS are a health concern
Research has linked PFAS exposure to increased cancer risk, immune-system effects, high cholesterol, thyroid disruption and developmental effects in infants and children. Because they accumulate over time, reducing ongoing exposure matters.
