Reverse Osmosis vs. Pitcher Filter: What Actually Removes Contaminants?

Not all water filters do the same job. The gap between a pour-through pitcher and a reverse osmosis system is bigger than most people realize, and it comes down to the difference between improving taste and actually removing dissolved contaminants.
What pitcher filters do
Most pitcher filters use a small amount of activated carbon. They're genuinely good at what they're designed for: reducing chlorine taste and odor, and some reduce lead. But their short contact time and limited media mean they leave behind many dissolved contaminants, including most disinfection byproducts, chromium-6, nitrates and the majority of PFAS.
What reverse osmosis does
Reverse osmosis uses household water pressure to push water through a semipermeable membrane with pores around 0.0001 microns. Combined with carbon pre- and post-filtration, RO reduces up to 99% of dissolved contaminants, the disinfection byproducts, heavy metals, PFAS and nitrates that pitchers miss.

The honest tradeoffs
Pitchers are cheap and need no installation, but filters clog quickly and you're limited to a jug at a time. An under-sink RO system costs more upfront and installs in under an hour, but delivers unlimited purified water on demand and costs far less per gallon over its lifetime.
